Dating Guide: 5 Things Not To Do On a First Date

Dating is a difficult game. And, yes, it is a game. When you're getting to know someone, you have to play your cards right because they will be evaluating your every move. Whether intentionally or subconsciously, it happens.

That's why it's important to show your personality but also adhere to simple strategies and social expectations that will secure you a second date. We all know the no-brainers of what not to do, like discuss your past relationships and talk ad nauseum about your ex; but what about those simple everyday things you do with your friends that you're not supposed to do on a date?

1. Don't Drink in Excess or Smoke

This may seem like a silly reminder, but when we're on first dates, we get nervous and reach for alcoholic libations to relax our nerves. But drinking too much on a first encounter could mean troubled waters ahead. Additionally, don't light up a cigarette without discussing it with your date first.

2. Avoid Overdressing

Donning a suit and tie directly after work for a happy-hour date is one thing; but going completely glam for your first date is another. You don't want to make your date feel underdressed and embarrass them, because that's what they will remember.

3. Don't Be Late, Seriously

Showing up fashionably late works everywhere except on a first date. The other person will find it as a sign of disrespect. If you think you might be late because of traffic, send a text or call and ask to push back the date by 20 or 30 minutes. Just give them enough time so they're not waiting around for you. They're just as nervous as you are, and making them wait will only worsen it.

4. Absolutely Avoid Discussing Sex

Unless you both already laid down the law about your intentions of getting busy, don't bring it up. Don't even make jokes about it. Talking about sex on a first date is like bringing the dead guy from Weekend at Bernie's with you. It's offensive, gross, and tasteless.

5. Eat Normally, But Pause For Conversation

We know you may be nervous, but slamming your food quickly or eating too slowly can make your date uncomfortable. No one wants to be noshing away alone while the other party is clearly ready to leave.
